Chicken Receives Custom Walkin' Wheels Wheelchair

Granite Heart is a small Bantam chicken who has never walked on her own. Granite Heart has limited mobility. Born with leg is locked in position tucked underneath, she can only use the leg to help with balance. But, Granite Heart never let her disability hold her back. Instead she has taught herself to hop or fly to get wherever she needs to go.

A Chicken with a Fighting Spirit

Granite Heart’s will to live is incredible. Incredibly bonded with one of her siblings, the two chickens lived in a separate cage for the first two years of her life. Everything changed when one night a year ago when Granite Heart and her sibling were attacked by a weasel. Although severely injured in the attack, Granite Heart fought off the weasel and won. Unfortunately, her companion didn't survive the attack. Severely injured, her Veterinarian didn’t believe she could survive her wounds. Knowing Granite Heart was a fighter, her owner Sarah knew she could pull through. Bringing Granite Heart into the family home where she could heal, Granite Heart quickly became a part of the family. Granite Heart now loves to sit and cuddle with her family members and has even became friends with Guinevere, their small Yorkiepoo. Given the time to heal, Granite Heart beat all odds and survived.

A Will to Walk

Her family was inspired by Granite Heart's feisty spirit and wanted to do whatever they could to give her the best quality of life. Although, she's never let her disability get in her way, Sarah wanted to see Granite Heart walk on her own. When she came across Merlin the duck's story, she thought that maybe a wheelchair was the answer for Granite Heart. Sarah and Granite Heart made the three-hour drive to visit the Walkin’ Pets Headquarters in Amherst, NH. In the hopes of getting her the first ever Walkin’ Wheels Chicken Wheelchair.

Chicken Wheelchair first steps

Custom Walkin’ Wheels Chicken Wheelchair

The Walkin’ Pets team worked closely with Granite Heart, determining what would give her the best chance to take her first steps. With her small, 1.5 lb frame they knew she would need a lightweight wheelchair. With a tendency to lean forward to accommodate her bad leg, Granite Heart needed support in the front. The team built her wheelchair with a front bar that she could rest her chest on and use for balance. Her special roller ball casters would allow her to move in any direction with ease. Now, with the help of her custom-built wheelchair, Granite Heart can stand upright for the first time in her life and learn how to walk.

Disabled pets are family and Walkin’ Pets will continue to work with Sarah and Granite Heart to develop the perfect wheelchair for Granite Heart and for future chickens alike.
