Does My Dog Have a Cold?
It is possible for dogs to have a cold. Although their cold may be very different from ones contagious among humans, they can be very similar. Dogs can have the sniffles along with other signs that we associate with a “cold” such as runny nose, wheezing, and coughing in dog’s often are signs of a respiratory illness or influenza.
Signs Your Dog is Sick with a Cold or Flu
- Red eyes
- Runny nose
- Nasal congestion
- Wheezing
- Sneezing
- Coughing
A mild cold isn’t cause for concern, but it never hurts to talk to a pet professional. Some typical canine cold symptoms may also be the sign of a more dangerous condition, and may need to be checked out. In severe cases of respiratory distress a dog’s gums and tongue may start to turn blue. If your dog is experiencing difficulty breathing they need to be taken to the Vet immediately. Your vet should also be contacted if cold symptoms last beyond a week.
If you hear a “honking” noise it’s unlikely caused by a cold or illness, it’s more apt to be an issue with their trachea. Trachea collapses most commonly occur in smaller breeds such as Yorkshire Terrier, Shih Tzu, Chihuahua, and Lhasa Apso.
Other Conditions With Cold-like Symptoms
- Parvovirus
- Influenza (dog flu)
- Kennel Cough
- Bronchitis
- Canine Distemper

How to Treat a Dog Cold
Dogs showing signs if a cold may need medical treatment. Always check with your Veterinarian before treating your dog’s illness on your own. In most cases, your dog’s cold will clear up naturally given time and proper care. While it’s unlikely you can catch your dog’s cold, other animals can. Isolate your dog and keep them away from other household pets.
Here are a few simple things you can do to make your dog more comfortable as they recover from their cold:
- Give them time to rest
- Keep them hydrated
- Provide them with nutritious food
- Use a humidifier
If your dog’s symptoms worsen or continue beyond a week, they need to see a Veterinarian immediately as further treatment may be necessary.
