It’s impossible to completely prepare yourself for how you’ll react in a stressful situation. The best thing you can do is be prepared. Have a pet first aid kit on hand and familiarize yourself with basic first aid techniques. Have emergency numbers handy. Your regular Vet may not be available during weekend and evening hours, find a local practice that’s open 24 hours a day just in case.

2. Provide Comfort

Provide comfort but handle your dog as little as possible. Hugging and holding your pet may cause them additional pain. Whenever possible, sit next to your dog and comfort by speaking calmly.

3. Lift Your Pet Carefully

Lifting a scared and injured pet in and out of the car safely is challenging. Transporting a small pet in a carrier that you can safely secure in your car may be easiest. Moving a larger dog can be even more difficult.

A stretcher is the easiest, safest way to move your dog into your car. Allowing you to maintain control of your dog while securing them in the vehicle.

If in doubt on the best way to safely move your dog without causing additional harm, call your Veterinarian for advice.

4. Restrain Your Pet

An injured pet who is in pain may not act like themselves. A normally docile, calm dog may lash out when they’re in pain. Always keep your dog leashed and under your control. If you can safely use your dog’s seatbelt or safety harness during transport, do so.

5. Call Your Veterinarian

In an emergency take the time to call your Veterinarian before you arrive. Give them as much information as possible. This will allow them to prepare everything ahead of time, so when you arrive they can begin treating your dog immediately.
