Dachshund Surrendered to Vet Gets a Dog Wheelchair

Meet Grant, a Dachshund who was surrendered to the Yadkin Park Animal Hospital in North Carolina due to hind limb paralysis. Once there, Janet Johnston, DVM, took care of all of Grant’s medical expenses and enabled him to get a Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair so that he would have an easier time being adopted to a forever home.

Dr. Johnson incorporated physical therapy and TENS therapy to assist with Grant’s mobility. As a result, the four-year-old Doxie has shown some improvement. Additionally, a volunteer provides acupuncture for Grant to help with his recovery.

As for the wheelchair, Dr. Johnston says,

“Grant LOVES the wheelchair!”

Dachshund Back Story

Grant sustained a back injury in October 2015. At that point, he had back surgery and made a full post-surgical recovery. Unfortunately, Grant re-injured his back in November 2016 after jumping off a couch, and has been paralyzed ever since.

Grant’s owners surrendered him because they could not afford another back surgery for the dog, nor could they provide the special care he might need.

Hopeful Future for Dog

Dr. Johnston is currently fostering Grant and providing medical care until the right home is found for him, complete with a family who will give him lots of love.

Dr. Johnston says,

“Grant is such a sweet little guy and loves people. He LOVES to run around in the wheelchair and clean the floor of any food. He is starting to try to use his back legs, so I am very hopeful that he will one day walk again. Until then, the wheelchair gives Grant the freedom to be more like a normal dog.”
